“…my recent longish piece, describing how hyperinflation might happen in the United States, clearly struck a nerve… Essentially, I argued that Treasury bonds are the New and Improved Toxic Assets. I argued that, if there was a run on Treasuries, the Federal Reserve—in its anti-deflationary zeal, and its efforts to prop up bond market prices—would over-react, and set off a run on commodities. This, I argued, would trigger hyperinflation… However, there were two issues that many readers had a hard time wrapping their minds around, with regards to a hyperinflationary event…”

“As a jaded observer of the livestock industry, I just sighed when I learned the scale of the current salmonella-tainted egg recall: 380 million eggs, distributed under 10 different brands in 17 different states, all from a single producer — Iowa-based Wright County Farms. Another day, another industrial-ag gaffe imperiling the health of millions… But then William Neuman’s New York Times piece hipped me to the name of the owner of Wright County Farms: one Austin “Jack” DeCoster. That’s when my sigh became a gasp. Jack DeCoster is one of the most reviled names in industrial agriculture…”

“…As predicted last year, the people most hurt by the price increases are those who can least afford them. The used-car market usually attracts people who need transportation on a budget, who cannot afford to buy new. By destroying a quarter’s worth of trade-ins in three weeks and permanently taking them off the market, the Obama administration has forced an artificial inflation by supply restriction. Moreover, they did so by subsidizing new-car sales that would have occurred anyway, eating up three billion dollars in taxpayer money…”

“The Hindenburg Omen reared its ugly head late last week, signaling more doom and gloom as stocks plod along amid the dog days of summer. The Omen, a technical indicator which uses a plethora of data to foreshadow a stock-market crash, was tripped again on Friday, marking the second time since Aug. 12 it has occurred…”

“…just try ‘income tax without income.’ Just how bad is the California state budget? According to Doug Ross, they’re taxing people on income they have yet to receive. Last year, to balance its books, California paid a bunch of people not in money, but IOUs that the state would make good at some vague, undefined date. …But the state still needs money, so it’s demanding that the recipients pay income taxes on the money they’re owed…”

“As if investors weren’t feeling edgy enough about the stock market as economic fears mount again, now there’s the “Hindenburg Omen” to worry about. Or not… All four conditions for the omen were met in Thursday’s trading session, the first time that’s happened since June 2008. Three months after that last signal, of course, was the start of the market meltdown that followed the collapse of Lehman Bros…”

“The New York soup shop immortalized by the Seinfeld show’s “Soup Nazi” character reopened Tuesday in Midtown Manhattan after a hiatus of six years. There was a line around the block, but the soup man himself — Al Yeganeh — was unavailable. He has never been amused at his portrayal in the sitcom and the media…”

“Incompetence has turned the Gulf oil tragedy into “Obama’s Katrina.” As more and more startling facts emerge we are finding almost criminal ineptness by Washington compounded by BP’s almost criminal negligence. As with many crises, Washington’s reactions cause greater damage than the event itself. Yet lurking in the mess are the extreme environmentalists staffing the Obama Administration with their declared agenda of shutting down all offshore oil drilling…”

” ‘By reaching into virtually every sector of economic life, government is injecting uncertainty into the marketplace and making it harder to raise capital and create new businesses,’ said Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg at a speech in Washington in late June.

“…’We don’t know what to expect from Washington. That’s essentially what Seidenberg is saying,’ said Shlaes, author of the influential book ‘The Forgotten Man,’ which argues that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s punitive and unpredictable policies toward business prolonged, rather than solved, the Great Depression.”

“Based on the results of the tech team’s tests, we believe that optimization is not a good deal for most consumers. Our tests show that the service did not improve performance, and there are a number of free ways to do many of the same tasks (though you may be out of luck if you just have to have those exclusive “100 system tweaks”). We’ve listed a few of them below.

“Yes, having Geek Squad download your Windows updates can save you time, but the tech team found that the service was inconsistent. Best Buy hadn’t finished installing all the updates, and of course, a power cable was missing from one of the computers. The computers we received still had the trialware installed – only the shortcuts were removed from the desktop…”

It took me almost four years to change my mind about this, and though I have made peace with the new arrangement it will still take time for me to get used to it. I speak of course of my decision to swap the color assignments of Nature and Market. Ever since summer of 2005 on this website, the Realm of the Market has been green and the Realm of Nature (originally called “Creation”) was orange. Something in the back of my head was always asking me why it was this way and vice versa, and I always answered that something with two reasons:

In America, the color green is associated with money, so why not?

I find the modern environmental movement obnoxious, so I was reluctant to give them their color of choice.

In the end, my reasons were based on my whims and predilections, without any other basis. This is silly, so the justification for the color swap are now as follows:

I believe that the United States dollar will sometime soon be collapsing like a house of cards. Since “greenback” will soon once again be a term of derision, the Realm of the Market will be given instead the color of fire, which may be more appropriate considering the power and destructiveness of that “Element”.

Seriously, it only makes sense that the Realm of Nature shold be represented by the color that can be seen almost everywhere outside of the limits of any city. So you greenies can have your precious color. I respect your desire to preserve nature and keep things clean for future generations, and agree with it to a point, though for the entirely different reason that we are commanded to do such things by God. That said, I still think that your ideas about naturally occurring microbe-to-man evolution and human-caused climate change that you have foisted upon the minds of a fallen human race are highly preposterous hoaxes.

That is all. (And really, it’s not much.)
